Following through with our packing guide, we decided to create an entire road trip itinerary for you! This will take you from Nairobi to Samburu, through Kwale and into Diani- allowing you to skip the madness that is Mombasa City. HOWEVER, travelling through Mombasa City is definitely a one of a kind experience, which we definitely recommend as well!
1. Nairobi to Voi: This incredibly scenic drive allows you to pass through Chyulu Hills National Park and Tsavo West National Park. Chyulu Hills National Park is the perfect place for nature lovers: with expansive rolling hills and blue skies. Great for bird watching, and large mammals like buffaloes, bushbucks, elands, elephants and leopards can also be spotted. Tsavo West is a rugged landscape, where you can see crystal clear water splashing out from Mzima Springs which is made from lava rock to the Shetani (devil) lava flows, and caves created by volcanic activity. Please ensure you speak to guides in the area and be responsible, there could be predators around that would not take kindly to being disturbed.
Lake Jipe is a refreshing stop on your way out of Tsavo West. It is 12 km long and 2.5 km wide, and since it lies on the border of Tanzania and Kenya, 12 square km belong to Tanzania and 14 square km to Kenya. Definitely take a few hours out of your trip to see this beautiful spot!
There are some beautiful and safe camping spots available in both Voi and Tsavo West if you're travelling on a budget, together with some lodges and resorts if you want to explore that option! A short detour would allow you to explore Tsavo East National Park too.
2. Voi to Samburu Kwale: Taita Hills is a great stopover! This glorious mountainous range is a biodiversity hotspot and boasts beautiful lodges, great hospitality and the opportunity to see our gentle giants roam free amongst other game.
3. Samburu Kwale to Shimba Hills National Reserve: Shimba Hills is one of the largest coastal forests in Kenya and boasts the highest concentration of the African Elephant. It has an incredible plethora of birds for bird watching and guests can see sable antelopes, elephant shrews, the bushy-tailed mongoose and other small mammals such as fruit bats.
4. Shimba Hills National Reserve to Diani Beach: Skipping Mombasa town, you'll get straight into Diani. Diani has a wonderful opportunity for plenty of excursions, lazy mornings by the beach and of course- water sports galore!
