They say sea turtles have been around for millions of years, which would explain why they move with such grace and splendour. A must-experience for adventurous travellers is swimming or snorkelling with sea turtles, and what better way to experience the life span of these lovely creatures than watching them lay or hatch their offspring? You can do so right here on the shores of Diani Beach, where The Zubeida is comfortably cradled.
Conservation travel
As the name suggests, conservation travel brings together travellers and the conservation community. It is a forward-thinking approach that offers a more meaningful travel experience for guests, and a vital source of support for conservation projects. We believe that conservation travel is the future of ecotourism in Africa. It is environmentally, financially and socially sustainable.
This unique experience gives travellers a chance to experience the real story of Africa’s wildlife and communities and it fits into a broader strategy for African wildlife conservation.
With that said, as you stay at the Zubeida this April and May, which happens to be a key nesting season for turtles in the area, a great idea would be to join the Diani Turtle Watch, a non profit that's working hard to save turtles in the South Coast of Kenya. As a bonus, they will be the host of the Diani Sea Turtle Festival which takes place in mid June, which will also mark the World Sea Turtle Day.
Why are Turtles Special?
Healthy oceans need sea turtles. Sea turtles are a "keystone species", which means they are an important part of their environment and influence other species around them. SeaTurtles.org says that if a keystone species is removed from a habitat, the natural order can be disrupted, which impacts other wildlife and fauna in different ways.
What we do know is that sea turtles—even at diminished population levels—play an important role in ocean ecosystems by maintaining healthy seagrass beds and coral reefs, providing key habitat for other marine life, helping to balance marine food webs and facilitating nutrient cycling from water to land.
Enjoy a hand-crafted experience this April and May at The Zubeida and explore an intimate turtle-watching exploration with your family or loved ones, against a backdrop of the beautiful rolling beaches of Diani.
